Week 2: God Hears Me When I'm Sad

Did you pick up your Family Devotional this week? Did you pick it up but if you're honest it is still in the car or found its way to the trash can with this week's bulletin?

Being a parent is a full time job which means you are always on the go and it can be a bit overwhelming at times. Our Family Devotionals are designed to be a tool that can help you with teaching your child about God's Word and how He wants to be a part of their life without you having to think up ideas all by yourself.

As we study the life of Moses we are learning that God is a part of everything even if we can't seem Him. We are learning that God has a plan for His people. To help your child continue to learn and understand this, do a puzzle with these next few weeks.

As you work together remind your children that even though there are many pieces and it doesn't look like anything yet as you work together and follow the picture on the book you will be able to put the puzzle together. Explain to your children how God made us and even though sometimes we mess up or things don't go right or we don't get what we want or we are sad or mad or happy, that God still knows what we should look like. He is there to help us become more and more like Him: loving, kind, generous, fair, patient, etc.

He gave us His son, Jesus. Jesus is kind of like the picture on the box. Jesus showed us how to live and we are to be like Him. And just like He was with Moses and the Israelites helping them, Jesus is with us ... helping us.

The 10 Fingered Prayer

Your children are learning The 10 Fingered Prayer: Philippians 4:13

I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME.

One word for each finger.
This a prayer that your child can recite (and you too!) whenever they are afraid, don't feel like they can do something they should, or anxious. It is a reminder that Christ is always with us and will help us through anything.
See how many times throughout the day you can learn this with your child.
It's also a great way to encourage counting with your child.
See if he/she can say it with their toes.

Bringing it Home: What's My Story?

This weekend lesson is all about a baby boy named Moses. Moses has a story: born into slavery, born into death and saved by the very Kingdom that sought his demise.

Here a couple things you can do this week at home to help your child begin to understand that God was involved in Moses' life and that God is also involved in their life.

  • Make a date with your child and get out all the pictures you have of them. Look at the pictures with your child telling them their story - how you found out you were going to have them or how you found out you were chosen to be their parents, share what you felt when you knew you were going to be a mom or a dad, show them your favorite picture of them and why, share with them about the first time they fell or got hurt, the first time the walked or their first word.

  • Find a book or go online and find pictures that trace the development of a child inside the womb. See if you and your child can find the hands and feet, the head, the toes, etc. Talk about how a child grows inside a mother, what the baby can feel and hear and sense.

  • Read Psalm 139 with your child. Depending on the age of your child and their attention span you may want to break this down in parts. Discuss with your child how God is always with them and knows all about them. He was involved in their creation; He formed them and knew who they were even before their mother did. Read Matthew 10:29-31 to your child. God knows how many hairs are on their head; how much God must love each and every one of us!

New Series: All About Moses - Gonna Build a Bridge in the Sky

Our New Series begins this weekend in the Tool Shed. For the next 8 weeks we will be learning all about Moses and how God used him to free the Israelite people.

To see our next 8 week of lessons click here. You can also preview video clips of the series as well.

Our new memory verse for the next four weeks is also known as the 10 Fingered Prayer (one word for each finger).
